3 Methods for Catching Seatrout

There are many methods and baits used for catching Seatrout. Seatrout are caught in the gulf of Mexico from Louisiana to Florida and on the east coast from Florida to the Carolina’s.

Methods and baits used to catch them depend on the area you are fishing and time of year. I’m going to share with you how I catch trout in SW Florida. Some methods and baits can also be used to catch other species, such as, Redfish and Snook.

Method #1: Popping cork with live shrimp. This is a method that many people use beginners and experienced fishermen. Charter captains use this method with their clients because it’s easiest way to fish, especially for a beginner. I use this method on my kayak charters as well. After throwing your line out pop the cork a couple of times and pause, wait about 20 seconds and twitch your rod tip to pop it again, continue this pattern until your line is back to to your boat or kayak. You can also use an artificial soft plastic bait in place of live shrimp.

Method #2: Artificial baits. There are a variety of artificial baits to choose from. A popular choice is a soft plastic swim bait. They come in various colors, shapes and sizes. A 3” white paddle tail is very popular. The Zman brand is a popular choice. I have used a 3”, 4” and a 5” soft plastic, primarily a paddle tail. Another popular bait that I like to use is a Mirrorlure suspending twitch bait. They come in different sizes and colors. In shallow water I like using a topwater plug.

Method #3: Use a live shrimp, small baitfish or cut bait fished on the bottom or free lined, no cork and sometimes no weight or light weight to keep the bait down close to the bottom. I use this method during the summer when the water is warm.
